Sleeping Beauty

A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula

Sleeping Beauty is a full-colour comic book graded reader that adapts the classic fairy tale for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells the story in 1,235 words and 319 headwords, so a beginner can read a complete tale of a curse and a hundred-year sleep in English.

At a glance

After years of waiting, a king and queen welcome a baby girl, Aurora, and good fairies come to her party with gifts — until the doors bang open and an angry dark fairy curses the child: one day she will touch a spindle and fall into a long sleep. A kind fairy softens the curse to a hundred years, and the king burns every spinning wheel in the land; Aurora grows up tall and kind. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader that builds steady suspense toward one moment: Will Aurora touch the spindle — and will anyone ever wake her?

How it teaches

Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence stands next to the picture that shows it. When the text says "The doors bang open" and the panel shows a dark figure in the doorway of a bright party hall, the reader understands the words and the shift in mood together. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): words stored with pictures are easier to understand and remember.

The adaptation uses 319 headwords across 1,235 words, with sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can. The fairies' gifts — "One gives a pretty face. One gives a sweet voice. One gives a kind heart." — are a neat example of the repeated patterns that make beginners fluent.

The curse is comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen) driven by suspense. The reader knows the danger from early in the book, so when an old stair and a turning wheel appear at the top of a tower, every short sentence is charged with meaning. The learner reads to reach the moment, and the English comes with it.

Who it is for

This edition is designed for adults and older teens. The art is elegant and dramatic; the story's themes — fate, protection, and what parents cannot control — have real depth. Nothing is graphic, so the book works in class.

The adaptation keeps the tale's key moments: the long-awaited birth, the fairies' gifts, the uninvited guest, the softened curse, the burning of the wheels and the tower room. Knowing the story helps the beginner; the gathering suspense keeps adult readers engaged.

It suits self-learners looking for a familiar first or second book and ESL/EFL teachers who need a complete classic with clear repetition for extensive reading.

Compared with traditional graded readers

Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers provide respected adaptations over many levels, some with audio and teacher support — a natural choice for a long course.

This Sleeping Beauty stands out at the first level: a full-colour comic in which images carry meaning and mood, an adult tone, and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants a familiar royal fairy tale and reads more confidently with pictures. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.
