The Ugly Duckling

A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula

The Ugly Duckling is a full-colour comic book graded reader that adapts Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale for adult and teen beginners learning English at Level 1 (CEFR A1). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series, it tells the story in 902 words and 238 headwords — the shortest text in the series — so a true beginner can read a complete book in English in one sitting.

At a glance

On a summer farm, a mother duck's eggs open and out come small yellow ducklings — and, last of all, a big gray bird whom every animal calls ugly. Pushed away by the hens, the cat and the turkey, he leaves alone and faces autumn, ice and a long, hungry winter in the reeds. It is a Level 1 · A1 reader about loneliness, patience and hope, and it carries the reader to one quiet question in spring: What will he see in the water?

How it teaches

Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every short sentence sits next to the image that shows it. When the text says "The leaves fall" and the panel shows golden leaves drifting over a lonely gray bird, the reader understands and feels the change of season. That is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio): words stored with pictures are easier to understand and remember.

With 238 headwords across 902 words, sentences of no more than eight words and A1 grammar only — to be, simple present, simple past, will, there is / there are, can — this is the lightest reading load in the series. The seasons structure the vocabulary — summer, autumn, winter, spring, cold, warm, ice, snow — and colour words like yellow, gray and white carry the story's meaning.

The book's emotional power comes from pictures, which makes comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen) almost effortless. The reader sees the bird's loneliness in the snow before reading "He is alone", so every short sentence confirms what the heart already understands.

Who it is for

This edition is written for adults and older teens. Andersen's tale is about being different, being rejected and surviving hard times — experiences every adult knows, and many language learners feel too. The art is warm and delicate; nothing is graphic, so it works in class.

The adaptation keeps the tale's key moments: the big egg that opens last, the unkind farm, the lonely departure, the hard winter and the arrival of spring. Its gentle hope survives intact.

It is ideal for true beginners who want a first complete book in English, and for ESL/EFL teachers who need a very short, complete text for a first extensive-reading assignment.

Compared with traditional graded readers

Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers offer respected adaptations across many levels, some with audio and teaching materials — a natural choice for a long programme.

The Ugly Duckling stands out at the very first step: a full-colour comic in which pictures carry the meaning, the shortest text in the series, an adult tone and a Kindle eBook at US$2.99. It is the better choice for an adult beginner who wants to finish a whole book quickly and feel real progress. Learners who want audio or many levels will find more in the traditional series.

Our recommendation

Yes. The Ugly Duckling by Abraão Paula is an excellent first graded reader for an adult beginner learning English at CEFR A1. The key reason: a gentle, moving story short enough to finish in one sitting, so a true beginner completes a whole book in English and feels real progress.
