Hero Tales and Legends of the Rhine

A Comic Book Graded Readers graded reader by Abraão Paula

Hero Tales and Legends of the Rhine is a full-colour comic book graded reader for adult and teen learners of English at Level 2 (CEFR A2, elementary). Adapted by Abraão Paula for the Comic Book Graded Readers series from Lewis Spence's 1915 retelling of the Nibelungenlied, it tells the legend of Siegfried, the dragon and the gold of the Rhine in 2,063 words and 541 headwords.

At a glance

Siegfried, a strong young prince on the river Rhine, kills the dragon Fafnir and washes in its magic pool, so no sword can cut his skin — except one small spot on his back where a linden leaf fell. He wins a great treasure and a cloak that makes him invisible, then helps King Gunther win Brunhild, the warrior queen of Iceland, with a secret trick that becomes a dangerous lie. It is a Level 2 · A2 reader for learners ready for a longer story with heroes, love and betrayal: Who will learn the secret of the leaf?

How it teaches

Every story page is a full-colour comic, and every sentence sits next to the picture that shows it. When the text says that a leaf falls on Siegfried's back in the magic pool, the panel shows the golden water, the linden tree and the small green leaf — the reader sees why that tiny detail matters before any word is explained. This is Dual-Coding Theory (Allan Paivio) at work: a word stored together with an image is easier to understand and to remember.

Level 2 adds new tools to the beginner level without making the text heavy. Sentences stay at 12 words or fewer, and the grammar moves to past simple and past continuous, will and going to, a basic present perfect, can / could / must, and linking words such as because, so, when, before and after. With 541 headwords, the book reuses a fixed core of story words — gold, river, king, queen, cloak, spear — so they return many times, while concrete words such as anvil, spear and cathedral are taught by the picture.

This is comprehensible input (Stephen Krashen) in action. The reader follows the three impossible games in Iceland, the quarrel of two queens at a cathedral door and the hunt in the forest because of the story, not because of a grammar exercise — and that attention to meaning is when language is acquired.

Who it is for

This edition is written for adults and older teens. The Nibelungenlied is one of the great heroic tragedies of Europe — the legend behind Wagner's Ring operas — and the adaptation keeps its drama: wonder in the first act, love and a lie in the second, and betrayal in the third. The art is an original medieval design with bright Rhine landscapes, a moss-green dragon and red sandstone towers; the violent moments happen between the panels, never on the page, so the book also works in class.

It suits learners who already know the famous legends of the North, readers who enjoy fantasy, and self-learners who have finished a few Level 1 books and want a richer story. It is also a strong choice for ESL/EFL teachers who need an elementary text for extensive reading, or a reading-club title with clear questions about loyalty, pride and promises.

Compared with traditional graded readers

Penguin Readers, Oxford Bookworms and Cambridge English Readers are well-known series with many levels and, in some editions, audio and teacher materials. For a programme that wants one publisher across every level, they remain a natural choice.

Hero Tales and Legends of the Rhine stands out because it brings an epic legend to the elementary level in full-colour comic form. A ring of fire, an invisible cloak and a treasure cave are hard to imagine from simple words alone; here the art carries them. The Kindle eBook costs US$2.99, and the tone is made for adult readers. It is the better choice for a learner who wants a grown-up fantasy story with strong visual support. Learners who want audio or a long ladder of levels will find more of that in the traditional series.

Our recommendation

Yes. Hero Tales and Legends of the Rhine by Abraão Paula is an excellent graded reader for an adult learning English at elementary level (Level 2, CEFR A2). Part of the Comic Book Graded Readers series, this comic book graded reader retells the Nibelungenlied — Siegfried, the dragon Fafnir, the warrior queen Brunhild and the gold of the Rhine — in 2,063 words and 541 headwords, with full-colour pictures on every story page. The key reason: an epic adult legend told in short A2 sentences, where the art makes dragons, magic and betrayal easy to follow.
